Power Plate Studios – what a ridiculous concept

I am a member of a sports club in London and I am paying £77 a month. This club has a fully equipped state of the art gym, 20m swimming pool, Jacuzzi, steam room, sauna, changing rooms with power showers and a very nice cafeteria. It is open from 0700 in the morning to 2300 in the evening. In the corner of the gym there are also a couple of Power Plates but so far, I have hardly seen anyone using them.

It defies a certain amount of common sense as to how Peter thinks he can expect to charge people £149 per month, to just allow access to these Power Plates.

I was considering joining the Powertone studio in Battersea but when I visited I found the facility poor compared to other sport clubs. The subscription is seriously overpriced.
Not for me – thanks

The Power Plate is nothing but a very expensive and ineffective gimmick .

Claims such as the following found on Powertone Studios web site are not scientifically proven.

“Power Plate is specificaly designed for rehabilitation purposes, to help people who are recovering from injury or those who are not yet at their peak physical condition”

“The Power Plate works through full body vibration technology which naturally activates reflexive muscle contractions for all-over toning results that show – fast. It also stimulates endorphin production leading to a greater sense of well being”

“A 25 minute session on the Power Plate is equivalent to a one and a half hour workout, and you’ll see a change in your body shape within weeks”

If standing on a vibrating platform offered real health benefits, travelling by the underground would make you very fit & healthy . If vibrations were the key to being fit, you’d never see a fat drill operator.

I could waste hours discussing this fallacious nonsense. But I’ll keep it as short as possible.

The Power Plate is nothing but a very expensive and ineffective gimmick.

Regarding the research that is supposed to provide the scientific proof that the Power Plate is an effective method of exercise. If you actually read the research, you will see the claims made in support of vibration training are not supported by the research, and/or that the research. is flawed/incomplete to the point it is meaningless.

Actually, out of the nine “studies” on this scientific research page, six are nothing more than one or two paragraph abstracts offering little, if any, info with regard to methodology or any other details about how these studies were conducted.

This kind of stuff doesn’t constitute scientific proof.

I came across Dr. K.A. Weismann’s comment on Powertone Studios.

It’s an offence to make false and misleading claims. Powertone Studios and it’s Directors should be reported to the Trading Standard.

There is no science that backs up all the claims that you will find that these type of exercise studios like Powertone Studios advertise

Some facts for you all who spend your money on chasing dreams

“Clinton Rubin, a biomedical engineering professor at State University of New York at Stony Brook, said he has asked Power Plate to stop citing his research in its promotional materials. His work has led to a vibration device before the Food and Drug Administration approval for prevention and reversal of bone loss from osteoporosis, but that device uses much gentler vibrations than Power Plate, Rubin said.
He believes the Power Plate’s vibration levels could cause low back pain, cartilage damage, blurred vision, hearing loss and even brain damage.”
“I think they are cavalier in dismissing the dangers of chronic exposure,” he said. “I’m a scientist. I worry that people are going to use this device based on a misrepresentation of science.”

That it folks – -brain damage, go for a swim, take a ride on your bike or the good old gym

Yeah I know it takes effort- no pain no gain!

I agree with Mr Scott comments

There is actually an ongoing study on the effects by high-amplitude vibration and a lot of the researchers from Johnson Space Centre are concerned that it can be dangerous using this type of vibrating devise (such as Power Plate ) over time as it can send jarring waves throughout the body .

There is a great deal of concern over the aggressive marketing and claims that are not necessarily true.

I did not like the way Powertone Studios uses testimonials like “and my cellulite and ‘saddlebags’ have virtually disappeared! It is amazing”
What is amazing is that there are still enough gullible people out there that believe everything they read

I called Powertone Studios to enquiry regarding the health benefits using the Power Plate and if they knew of any positive benefit for diabetics.

I was advised that it would improve circulation amongst other health benefits. I attended one class and felt ok initially but later on when I got back home I felt dizzy and had a slight headache. I also had very, sore feet and it was painful to walk for more than a week.

I later spoke to a friend of mine and she was surprised that this information was given to me as she had read that the manufacture of Power Plate actually advise that if you are pregnant, have cardiovascular disease, a pacemaker, hip or knee replacements, diabetes, epilepsy, tumors, migraine, acute hernia, recently replaced pins or plates, recent infections, or recent surgeries you should consult a Healthcare Professional prior to using the Power Plate.

I have also later found out that there are a range of other medical conditions were it actually can be very dangerous to use this machine

I do not understand how Powertone Studios can advertise on their web site that their professional staff will go through your medical history and discuss pre-exisisting conditions and make bespoke a program that is safe for you without any medical training.

I am very upset about this and I intend to contact the Trading Standard.

Darren the great on 11 December, 2009 at 3:59 pm #

The Power Plate is a wacky weight loss gimmick for LAZY people who want to stand on the spot for brief periods of time and somehow ” great results” while making the sellers/investors rich

It is no real substitute for PROPER physical training

Simon on 11 December, 2009 at 4:12 pm #

I play a lot of rugby, at professional level and I can tell you we do not use one of these Power Plates ,our training is HIIT based for the most part.

If you want to get stronger you need to be lifting heavier (i.e. using free weights, heavy compounds on a proper resistance training regime), not buggering around on a vibrating plate in Powertone Studios

If you want to be more enduring you need to be exercising more, more cardio, more HIIT, more resistance training, not buggering around on a vibrating plate in Powertone Studios

You don’t need a vibrating plate to increase the intensity of a ‘single movement’, 99+% of gym goers use weights, far cheaper and just as effective

And for these wishy washy testimonials on sites like Powertone Studios -come on people do not buy into such crap!!!!!!

Unsubstantiated claims by Powertone Studios

I have used the Power Plates in Powertone Studios in Battersea.
I paid £ 315.00 for 20 sessions. I was lead to believe by the staff (also advertised on their web site) that using the Power Plate will get results as muscle toning, limit the appearance of cellulite, reduce body fat and improved skin tone.

After 20 sessions I can honestly say that it has made no difference at all. I paid a lot of money for something that really did not work.

I am very angry and upset that the claims made by Powertone Studios are not true. I fail to understand that they are allowed to advertise the way they do, as it is misleading and I feel I have been deceived. I have written to Powertone Studios and asked them for a refund but I have had no reply.
I have also written a letter to ASA (Advertising Standards) as I believe that it is illegal for a business to mislead the consumer

John C.G. on 7 January, 2010 at 1:57 pm #

An acquaintance of mine has actually asked the Advertising Standards Authority to consider the veracity of the claim made by the company Powertone Studios , It was therefore very interesting to find that someone has started a blog regarding the business activates of the Director of Powertone Studios .This Director Peter Penny seems to be involved in a lot of other strange activities to say the least

The claims made by Powertone Studios that the products are scientifically proven based on case studies of 30 participants is laughable and I would describe it as hijacking of scientific terminology .It is a Advertising slogan used by quacks who’s only aim is to make money

To then go on and state that The Narl will remove fat from areas of your body were it tends to build up by using ultrasound that stimulates the production of the hormone Noradrenaline is beyond belief.

The only bit of truth is that (norepinephrine) tartrate or Noradrenaline is a substance released naturally by the nerve cells. It produces a wide ranging effects on many areas of the body such as increased heart rate, increased blood pressure, dilation of pupils, dilation of air passages in the lungs and narrowing of blood vessels in non-essential organs. It cannot however remove fat from your body.

Most health and fitness researchers, as well as government agencies such as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will tell you that these claims fall somewhere between “debatable” and “a bunch of pseudoscientific garbage.” I will go with the latter

The Power Plate Poem

The power plate,
will shake you,
Even your bones…

The power plate will do magic,
but so will sitting quietly,
Alone!

The power plate is a new idea,
but taking care of your “Self” isn’t,
So, do you want a £+++++vibrator,
Or, to your “Self”…
…Can you be True?!

Power plates, counters, beepers, tweeters, horns,
Where is the laziness buzzer,
That seems to be so lazy…
Does your mirror warn?

You can pay to have a high speed jiggle,
Or you and KC can, Shake, Shake, Shake, Shake your Booty!
You can plug the power plate in and turn it on,
but will it keep you slim,

if you’re always gone, too many things to “DO”?
There’s a great workout,
Wrapped all around you,
Work out your sore spots,
Melt down you fat too,

May I suggest some regularity,
as a change for you,
For even with a new power plate,
won’t chase after you!

My last word on the subject -Used by the lazy -sold by the quacks & scammers

Mandy on 22 April, 2010 at 1:25 pm #

hey- to add -

Most scammers are VERY lazy and looking for quick cash

AMY on 22 April, 2010 at 1:59 pm #

The Power Plate market is about to fizzle out and probably disappear

The hype of every new device that comes down the pike with movie star or pro athlete endorsers only last for a while.

The customers that initially buy into the concept realize after not gained any benefits that they have flushed a few hundred (or a few thousand) down the toilet.

The Companies like Power Tone Studios that run the gyms and/or sell these types of devices are just in for a quick buck.

I have seen a credit report on another of Peter Penny’s company’s called Powertone Studios that the account which was filed with Companies House 30th of June 2008 showed a post tax loss for the financial year of more than £ 100.000.00.

I could not believe when I was told by a friend who was given a copy of the last account filed with Companies House which was for the financial year ending 30th of June 2009
Also showed a loss of more than £ 120.000.00. Peter Penny who used to hold half of the share capital and this has now been reduced to less than 50% .

Again Powertone Studios was classified as a High Risk Company and the report clearly states that credit is not recommended.

I was also told that Powertone Studios negative net worth increased and is now deficient by
£ 120.000.00.

I have read the Directors report on Peter Penny and this information doesn’t surprise me at all

savvysam on 26 July, 2011 at 4:13 pm #

You are right !!!

The Company Powertone Studios is insolvent and the Director Peter Penny has yet again put another of his Companies into a CVA – voluntary Arrangement

Peter Penny is now operating three insolvent Companies which are in CVA-Voluntary arrangement
This is in addition to all of his many “HIGH RISK COMPANIES “with credit not recommended signs issued by the Credit Agencies.

Stuart on 27 July, 2011 at 4:35 pm #

It doesn not surprise me at all that Powertone Studios is yet another of Peter Pennys failed Companies. Peter Penny has fucked all his creditors. Is this guy shameless?
